Why this exists
The NIHR INCLUDE framework requires funded research to demonstrate genuine Patient and Public Involvement, structured, costed, and aligned to the populations the research is meant to serve. Reviewers now flag applications where PPI reads as an afterthought or a template.
The bottleneck for most academic PIs is not intent, it is time. Building community partnerships from scratch, negotiating MOUs, and paying participants at NIHR guide rates is months of unfunded work before the grant is even submitted.

Scope tiers
Single workstream. One community, one PPI workstream, one grant submission. Ideal for a Research for Patient Benefit or NIHR Fellowship application.
Multi-workstream, single community. Two or three parallel workstreams, single grant. Typical for a Programme Development Grant.
Multi-workstream, multi-community. For programme grants or platform trials with 4+ workstreams and community input required across multiple demographics.
Academic and non-profit access
Academic dataset access, for secondary analysis unrelated to the PPI package, is available at cost. Non-profit access is free by application. Both routes are subject to Trust & Ethics Board review.
